What is Botulinum Toxin?
Effective therapy for certain types of headaches, neck pain, cervical dystonia and limb spasticity from nervous system injury or disease. Botox works by placing medicine via sterile needle/ EMG guidance which temporarily blocks the neuron connection between the nerve and muscle, thus causing a slight local muscle paralysis of the spastic and/or painful muscle. The blockage is gradually bypassed by new nerve connections; these may take 3-4 months to regenerate. The treatment may be repeated, as tolerated.
Local side effects may include
- Slight increase in pain, until the nerve blockade is complete, 7-10 days.
- Local swelling, mild and resolves quickly
- Slight headache reported by limited number after botox
